Confirmed £30m transfer: Man United announce first signing of Mourinho era

Updated: June 8, 2016

Manchester United have confirmed via their official website the signing of Villarreal defender Eric Bailly.

The 22-year-old was in fine form for the Yellow Submarine last season, helping them claim a fifth-place finish in La Liga and reach the Europa League semi-final – where they were knocked out by Premier League side Liverpool.

He also boasts noteworthy experience at international level for a player so young, having registered 15 caps with Ivory Coast as part of the squad that lifted the 2015 African Cup of Nations title.

News broke yesterday of the 6 foot 1 centre-half undergoing a medical at Old Trafford and Manchester United have now confirmed via their official website that they’ve concluded a deal with Villarreal.

The transfer, believed to be worth somewhere in the region of £30million, is still subject to Bailly obtaining a work permit but it seems likely he’ll get one considering United have already announced the deal.

Bailly has signed on a four-year contract with the option of a further two years and told United’s official website; “It is a dream come true to be joining Manchester United. To play football at the highest level is all I have ever wanted to do.

“I want to progress to be the best that I can be and I believe working with Jose Mourinho will help me develop in the right way and at the right club. I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and to starting this new chapter of my life.”
